No matter where I am, no matter how many people are around us, they know my voice when I call my children. They can distinguish between when I want their attention or if another mother is calling for her children. They can tell by the tone of my voice whether I am in a bad mood, know if I am sad, or when I mean business and don’t play with me. How is this possible? It is because they know me personally. They know and understand my presence. Why? Because they spend intimate time with me.

How well do you know the voice of God? Can you distinguish between His voice or the voice of the enemy? Better yet, can you indicate the difference between His voice and your own? The more we spend time with God, the clearer His voice becomes. The contrast is the less time we spend with God, the less we can hear His voice among the many other voices distracting us. The problem with not being able to hear Gods’ voice is that we can go so long without doing so that it seems impossible. As a result, we begin to live life on our own accord. There are consequences for not being obedient to the voice of God, just as there are blessings.

Should my children not respond when I speak, believe me when I say they will know it. Should they misinterpret the tone of my voice, they will know it. However, If they hear my voice and respond accordingly to the instructions that I have given them, they will receive a reward and a favor in my sight. The same applies to our intimate relationship with God.

If you listen obediently to the Voice of GOD, your God, and heartily obey all his commandments that I command you today, GOD, your God, will place you on high, high above all the nations of the world. All these blessings will come down on you and spread out beyond you because you have responded to the Voice of GOD, your God: GOD’s blessing inside the city, GOD’s blessing in the country; GOD’s blessing on your children, the crops of your land, the young of your livestock, the calves of your herds, the lambs of your flocks. GOD’s blessing on your basket and bread bowl; GOD’s blessing in your coming in, GOD’s blessing in your going out. Deuteronomy 28:1-6 MSG
