The Struggle

Jeremiah chapter 20 gives us a glimpse into the personal struggles and persecution that the prophet Jeremiah faced in his ministry. In this chapter, we see Jeremiah expressing his deep anguish and frustration as a result of the opposition he encountered for delivering God’s messages to the people.

The chapter begins with Jeremiah recounting how the chief officer, Pashhur, had beaten him and put him in stocks. Jeremiah describes how he became a laughingstock and a source of mockery because of his faithful proclamation of God’s word. He expresses his weariness and desire to quit, even cursing the day he was born.

Despite his intense emotions and his desire to give up, Jeremiah realizes that he cannot hold back the message of God. He says, “But if I say, ‘I will not mention his word or speak anymore in his name,’ his word is in my heart like a fire, a fire shut up in my bones. I am weary of holding it in; indeed, I cannot” (Jeremiah 20:9, NIV). Jeremiah acknowledges that the call of God and His word burn within him, compelling him to continue speaking even in the face of opposition and persecution.

This chapter serves as a reminder of the challenges and struggles that can come when we faithfully follow God’s calling. Like Jeremiah, we may encounter opposition, ridicule, and even personal suffering for standing up for the truth and proclaiming God’s word. It is not always an easy path, and there may be moments when we feel weary and discouraged. I felt this way for almost two years.

However, just as God sustained Jeremiah, He will also continue to sustain us in our trials. He will provide the strength and courage we need to persevere. Like Jeremiah, we can find solace and renewal in the fire of God’s word burning within us, compelling us to press on despite the challenges.

This chapter encourages us to hold firmly to our faith and to trust in God’s faithfulness, even in the midst of difficulties. It reminds us that our obedience to God’s call may not always be met with immediate acceptance or approval, but that does not diminish the importance of our role as His ambassadors.

May we take inspiration from Jeremiah’s unwavering commitment and trust in God’s guidance. Let us be encouraged to persevere, knowing that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. May we continue to speak the truth and share God’s love, even in the face of opposition, trusting that God’s purposes will prevail.
