I am the Clay

Jeremiah chapter 18 tells the story of the potter and the clay, which is a metaphor for God’s relationship with His people. The chapter begins with God telling Jeremiah to go down to the potter’s house and observe what the potter is doing. Jeremiah watches as the potter takes a lump of clay and molds it into a vessel of his choosing. If the vessel becomes flawed, the potter can reshape it and make it into a new vessel.

The Lord then explains to Jeremiah that just as the potter has control over the clay, so too does God have control over His people. God is the potter, and we are the clay. If God sees that His people have turned away from Him and become flawed, He can reshape them and make them into something new.

The chapter goes on to warn the people of Judah that they need to turn away from their wicked ways and repent, or else they will face destruction. God offers them the opportunity to repent and turn back to Him, just as the potter can reshape the clay into a new vessel.

This chapter serves as a reminder that God is in control of our lives, and He has the power to shape us into something new and beautiful if we allow Him to. It also shows us that repentance and turning back to God is always an option, no matter how far we may have strayed. May we always remember that God is the potter, and we are the clay, and may we allow Him to shape us into vessels that bring glory and honor to Him.
