Lesson 5 on Fear: Responsibilities can be Fearful

We are all responsible for something or someone, and managing those responsibilities can be frightening. So many questions go through our minds that cause us to doubt our ability to complete the task we have been given effectively. Parents question are they raising their children right. Leaders question if they are leading and delegating well enough. Teachers wonder if they are getting the point across and so on. However, no matter how effective we are, our human minds will always find a reason to fear. But rather than fear coming from measuring up to human standards, we should fear being held accountable by God.

In scripture, we are told to carefully consider what we do because the fear of God is upon us. Every decision we make should be carefully and faithfully weighed on a scale of impartiality and honesty. Still, most importantly, we should seek out God’s guidance and instructions to complete tasks.

King Uzziah was 16 years old when he became king of Judah. He reigned for 52 years, leading an army of 307,500 warriors plus city builders. That is a lot of responsibility for a teenager, yet he was able to achieve a great deal, grew in fame, and became mighty because he sought the Lord. His downfall came once he became powerful and prideful and disobeyed God.

Our task may not be as grand as Uzziah’s, and it may be. Still, regardless of the size of our mission or responsibility, we must seek God’s guidance and fear being held accountable for our choices by God rather than allowing the fear and prosperity of the world to corrupt us.
