Lesson 2 on Fear: Fear is a lack of Trust

We often find ourselves fearful of the “what if,” the possibility that our needs may not be met or that a situation will have a different process or outcome than we may have hoped for. However, scripture tells us in Deuteronomy 10:14 that, to the Lord your God, belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. Deuteronomy 31:8 says The Lord your God goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Throughout scripture, we can find these promises and more that reassures us that God is in control and is in power and wants and does what is best for us, not to harm us.

Now, if we believe that the Word of God is true. If we believe that God is not a liar. And if we believe that God gives us his promises in his Word and that he is faithful to keep in his Word, how is it when we face a “what if,” we find it difficult to believe the Word of God? With his truth in sight, we can clearly see that the God who chose you and me and set his affections on us has more than what we need and that he is with us in every situation. So, why do we fear? Is it because we do not trust, or do we not know what the Word of God says so that we might trust.

Fear is the enemy of faith. Faith is a reliance, loyalty, and complete trust in God even when we don’t see how he will work a particular situation out. Fear is self-sufficiency, a questioning of God’s desire or ability to work in our lives, and a lack of trust in the same. Yet, to trust God, we must know that God in which we put our trust. We must know what his Word says about us and our needs to trust that he will fulfill his promises. This is why over and over, we are told to know and follow the Word of God. To fulfill God’s purpose and will in our lives, we need the content and substance of his Word in our hearts and minds. So, the next time you are faced with the fear of a what-if, ask yourself do you know what the Word of God says about you and your situation, and are you trusting?
