Draw Near

“Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.” James 4:8

As I was reading my daily devotional the verse, Psalms 27:4 says, “The one thing I ask of the Lord, the thing that I seek the most- to live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, delighting in the Lord’s perfections and meditation in his Temple.”
“Yo David, This is what I want as well…. But how do you do that?, sorry to say, but I don’t think you understand today’s life, our schedules, lack of sleep, sickness, work, sports, and all the things we modern-day human beings have to deal with.”
But if you have ever read the Psalms, every chapter is a new day, David or the other Psalmist are either having problems where an enemy is against them and trying to kill them, and they are begging God to save their lives, or they are praising God for everything that is going well in their lives. One thing about the Psalms is that each one ends with praising and thanking God.
What I’m getting at (very long-windedly) is that we won’t always be in the good perfect places every day. Don’t get me wrong, I, like David, want to live in the house of the Lord every day, and delight in his perfections and meditate….But when we don’t take the time to be near to God, we might feel distant from him as a result. I desire the feeling of closeness; I love the feeling. It brings me peace, comfort, and joy. The opposite happens when I stop doing the things that bring me closer to him. I feel distant, worried, anxious, far away from him. But guess what, He doesn’t go anywhere; we are just not drawing close to Him. It’s that simple. Draw close to Him, and he will draw near to you. It’s not about doing your daily devotional on the Bible app. Sorry, but that’s not going to bring you closer to him necessarily. Turn off the phone, turn off the music, and talk. Talk to God, get honest with him. Ask him to bring you closer to him. Watch how he will instantly lift your spirit, fill your heart. Please don’t take my word. Give it a try.
