The Power and Danger of Perspective

A few weeks ago, some good friends and I went to Orange Beach, Alabama, for a girls’ trip. There were a total of thirteen women with thirteen different personalities!!! A couple of the women like myself were new to the group of women who made this annual trip. I soon learned that the purpose of the yearly trip was for the women to spend time encouraging, inspiring, and making each other laugh hysterically. The aim was not a “God-centered” retreat, although each woman brought God into the midst in their way. However, no matter where I am or what I am doing, I ask God to show me what it is that I am to learn in this place at this time with these people. He is faithful to teach me.

Friday evening, when we arrived at our penthouse on the 24th floor, we spent time getting settled then soon went to the beach. We spent a great deal of time enjoying the view, great conversation, and several laughs. We also enjoyed going into the water and feeling the waves push us back and forth. While sitting in our huddle, a stranger came up to us and sparked up a lengthy conversation. During this conversation, we could tell that he was either under the influence or something was off. So when he said to us that there were sharks in the water, we took his warning as a gain of salt.

We made our way back to our condo enjoyed a great meal, more laughs, and the hot tub! The following day we all made our way to the balcony for the view and coffee. Within minutes we were all stunned at the sight of a group of four sharks in the same spot we were the day before. Not only were there sharks but stingrays. As we looked out over the balcony now in safety, we could see the individuals and families in the water who had no idea how close they were to danger. Many women began to yell, SHARK, yet their screams of warning went unheard just like the man’s the day before.

At that moment, God taught me one of the most valuable lessons I learned that weekend, the power and danger of perspective. See, when we were in the water and could only see a limited view, we too were unaware we were in grave danger. Yet, when we had the proper perspective and could look out at the bigger picture, we could see and prepare for the possibility of a shark attack. We could discuss what kind of sharks they possibly were, their patterns of behaviors, the likelihood of an attack, and more. We could even make a safety report for our protection and the protection of others.

What area of your life do you need the proper perspective? Are you in grave danger that you may be unaware of?

Seek God’s wisdom to have the proper perspective. His wisdom is as full as the oceans with water.
