At 22 years old, I am just learning to drive. Many may consider me a late bloomer and I get it, it took me a while to get over my fear of driving. Old habits die hard, so I attempted to ease into this new venture by creating a few rules for myself. I don’t drive with music on because I am easily distracted, and for this same reason, I keep my phone in my purse (thatalso has to be in the backseat) while driving. I don’t want any notifications to pop up or a call to come in and take my eyes off the road for even a second (those driver’s ed videos scarred me for life). My most significant rule is that I never drive somewhere I hadn’t driven to before or somewhere someone hasn’t driven me multiple times. Something about having to drive somewhere I was unfamiliar with frightened me. This made the Walmart and Family Dollar around the corner from my house a “Yes,” but much to my mother’s frustration, My younger sister’s school a “No.”
Her anger was understandable, though. I am often up anyways and have nothing else to do. It would make things easier for everyone if I just drove my sister to school in the morning. My mom wouldn’t have to get up hours before work, and my sister would actually be on time for first period. After about a week of rough mornings, my mom told me something that spoke much louder than she probably intended. She said, “That’s the whole point of driving; You learn as you go. It may take you longer, and you may get lost along the way, but eventually, you’ll get there!” This applied way past driving and spoke directly to my spiritual life. Not only was I missing valuable driving experience, but I was also missing out on the opportunity to serve my family.
How often do we limit God to what we are comfortable with instead of stepping out to do other things we know He calls us to do? When we limit ourselves to what we understand or can do on our own, we miss out on the beauty of life in the unknown with the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” We may not know what’s out there, but we have a faithful God who promises to lead the way. The unknown to us isn’t unknown to Him.
So put your faith to play, Let God lead the way, and go past what you know today! 🙂
