Rest

When do you rest? What day of the week is your Sabbath? The day you set aside to get away for the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Every day it seems like we are all in a rush. We have so much to get accomplished in such a small amount of time. The fact that we feel this way is not news to God.

God created the Sabbath, a day of rest, for us. This day, given by a loving God, is for us to rest from our responsibilities and a day of remembrance. We need to rest. Without rest, we can lose sight of the meaning of our working efforts. We can be consumed with our activities and lose the crucial balance of life. I know that taking time is not easy, yet it is vital to our existence and efficiency.

The Sabbath is also a day of remembering what God has done. We set this day aside to worship God as a result of our gratitude. We demonstrate to God how important He is to us. We give thanks for his provision. When we fail to have this day of refreshment and remembrance, we can begin to think we have to provide for ourselves, which is a pressure we can not handle. God teaches us to rest in Him or be crushed by a weight we were never meant to carry.

Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Work six days and do everything you need to do. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to God, your God. Don’t do any work—not you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your servant, nor your maid, nor your animals, not even the foreign guest visiting in your town. For in six days God made Heaven, Earth, and sea, and everything in them; he rested on the seventh day. Therefore God blessed the Sabbath day; he set it apart as a holy day. Exodus 20:8-11
