What excuses do you have for not doing what God is calling you to do? Is it that you don’t know enough about Christ? Are you not smart enough? Are you not business savvy? Are you not qualified? Or is it that you don’t trust God enough to do what He said He is going to do? For Moses, it was that he was not eloquent in speech.
He doubted that he could express the words God had given him in a way that others would want to listen and respond. Several times Moses felt the need to explain to God, his creator, why he was not qualified to what God had given him clear instructions to do. In Exodus 3:11 Moses says, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the sons of Isreal out of Egypt?” In response, God reminds Moses that He is “certainly with Him.”
However, after many signs that God is with Moses and is preparing the way for Him, Moses still presented excuses to God for why He should not be the one to do what God was asking of Him. Exodus 4: 10-14, Then Moses said to the Lord, “Please, Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither recently nor in time past, nor since You have spoken to Your servant; for I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.” The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord? Now then go, and I, even I, will be with your mouth, and teach you what you are to say.” But he said, “Please, Lord, now send the message by whomever You will.” Then the anger of the Lord burned against Moses, and He said, “Is there not your brother Aaron the Levite? I know that he speaks fluently. And moreover, behold, he is coming out to meet you; when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.
What is this teaching us? God has called each of us to fulfill our individual tasks. He called us, knowing in advance, our abilities. Not only does he call us but He is with us. He equips us and sends us the help that we need to fulfill any lack that we may have.
