Be a Wise Learner

One of the worst mistakes I believe a person, including myself, can make is to lead someone away from Christ. He is by far the most valuable treasure in the world. It breaks my heart at the thought that my sinful actions mixed with a poor understanding of Christ, observed by others have caused some to question the trustworthiness and faithfulness of God.

I fully understand that no situation or person is unredeemable by God. I know there is nothing that I can do to keep God from saving his people. I am not that boastful to think otherwise. But for the sake of this devotional, I want to focus on our actions. As I take moments to reflect, I think of the many times I have proclaimed the name of Jesus yet, my character did not reflect, that I knew him at all. I made His teachings seem insignificant by conforming his word to fit my situation versus me conforming to His word.

For many years, I failed to see the need to heed discipline and instruction. I lived life on my own accord. The consequences of doing so were often painful. More painful than the brief moment of pleasure or satisfaction. However, God has always been merciful, and for that, I am grateful. Yet again, my heart breaks when I think of those led astray by failure to live righteously. God gives each of us territory of influence. We can either manage our territory well, with His help and instruction. Or we can manage it poorly and negatively influence those within it.

For way too long, I made the wrong choice. Now I choose life.

Proverbs 10:17, Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray.

Who do you have influence over?
Are you leading them to life or astray?
