Day 2 with Joshua

The Heroine

Thank you for joining me today for the next step on our journey through Joshua. Today we are going to learn about an unlikely heroine who role models absolute trust in God.

Let’s read Joshua 2:1-7

“Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim. “Go, look over the land,” he said, “especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there. The king of Jericho was told, “Look, some of the Israelites have come here tonight to spy out the land.” So the king of Jericho sent this message to Rahab: “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, because they have come to spy out the whole land.” But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. She said, “Yes, the men came to me, but I did not know where they had come from. At dusk, when it was time to close the city gate, they left. I don’t know which way they went. Go after them quickly. You may catch up with them.” (But she had taken them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax she had laid out on the roof.) So the men set out in pursuit of the spies on the road that leads to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as the pursuers had gone out, the gate was shut.”

Now before we dive in many of us can get distracted by the fact that Rehab told a lie. By doing so we can miss the message of Rehabs’ life. Rehab says in Joshua 2:11, “When we heard of it (all the miracles done by God), our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.” *addition by me What does this mean? It means that Rehab feared the Lord. She demonstrated faith in the power of God by protecting the spies who came to her home. Hebrews 11:31 says,  “It was by faith that Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed with the people in her city who refused to obey God. For she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.”

Joshua 6:25, “So Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute and her relatives who were with her in the house, because she had hidden the spies Joshua sent to Jericho. And she lives among the Israelites to this day.”

So, what is the message of Rehabs life?

Don’t allow you past to keep you from doing what God wants you to do or from being among His people. God can change the heart of a sinner and use even the worst, who we would cast out, to fulfill His purpose. Everyone has value in God! God can use us, we just have to be willing to be used.

Meditate on: Joshua 2:11 …For the Lord your God is the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below.

Application: Be used by God for His purpose and glory.

Prayer:  Heavenly Father thank you for being the Lord of my life. Help me to live in the truth, that you are the supreme God of the heavens above and the earth below. Show me how to be used by you daily. Please help me to surrender my past and walk in obedience to you not being distracted by anything or anyone. In Jesus name, amen.
